The Green Lanes Strategy Group was a key consultative group to Haringey Council, set up in 2003 by Neighbourhood Management following the locally infamous incidents surrounding global heroin baron, Huseyin Baybasin, who for a time made his headquarters in Harringay's Green Lanes. The group's remit was to regenerate Harringay's high street and the immediately surrounding area. Its geographic scope closely matches Harringay Online's map of Harringay. The group dissolved in Spring 2014.
The group was approved by Council Committee in July 2003. Shortly after it was set up, it drew up a five-year plan.
The GLSG was twice successful in bidding for GLA regeneration funds of totalling over £3M for the Green Lanes corridor, and held two extremely successful food festivals. The last of the regeneration works started during the group's existence are due to finish in late 2014.
Reporting directly to the Council, it became the forum where the important decisions about Harringay tended to be made rather than the fairly ineffectual Area Assemblies and Area Forums. Membership of the group was by invitation only. There were no formal criteria for inclusion beyond being part of a formally constituted organisation that could lay claim to represent some portion of the Harringay residential or business population. Membership was in the gift of the committee chair.
Sporadic PR style newsletters were published. However, these petered out with the demise of the supporting Neighbourhood Management structure.
The group's members included:
The chair since its inception was Councillor Nilgun Canver until her suspension in 2013/14 when Councillor Zena Brabazon took over for the few months before the group dissolved.
