Reuse and Recycle

Page history last edited by Liz 12 years, 10 months ago

Often people don't want to simply throw stuff away and would like to pass it on. This page is for suggestions about where you can take unwanted items to be reused and recycled.

Haringey Freecycle

The Haringey Freecycleâ„¢ group is open to all who want to "recycle"  something rather than throw it away. One main rule: everything posted must be free. Join the Freecycle community here

ReStore

ReStore collect used furniture, cookers and fridges which are subsequently supplied to people in need. All cookers and fridges are tested, refurbished and supplied with a 6 month guarantee. ReStore are based in Unit 18 Ashley Road, Tottenham Hale London, N17 9LJ, (020 8493 0900) www.restorecommunityprojects.org .

Haringey Council supports this venture through the free white goods collection service and the Reuse and Recycling Centres.

All of the electrical items that get picked up through the free White Goods Collection Service are delivered to ReStore Community Projects in Tottenham Hale.  The staff there will then go through the items to extract those that they will be able to re-condition or reuse, and the remainder will be transported up to Edmonton by ReStore (on  behalf of Haringey Council) to be passed over to the North London Waste Authority for recycling.

ReStore are also involved in dealing with the larger white goods that get dropped off at the Reuse & Recycling Centres, in that they will visit both sites to take away any items that they can reuse.  The remaining items, as well as all of the small electrical items that get delivered there, are collected through an arrangement organised by the NLWA under the Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive.  These items will be sent to specialist companies to be recycled.

ReStore is now open to the general public. Check website for details of opening times.

Recycling IT equipment

There are a number of options for unwanted IT equipment. The easiest way to get rid of a computer or monitor is to have it collected for free by Haringey Council by phoning 020 8885 7700. It is not permitted to leave items on pavements to be taken away

Computer Aid International, based in Southgate, take individual donations of laptops, computers, monitors and other computer stuff. See this page on how to donate.

Another option if you have unwanted IT equipment that you want to donate to charity, is to list it at Donate a PC. There is also a comprehensive list of places that deal with unwanted IT equipment at  IT for charities

Recycling and Repairing Electrical Equipment

Just over the border in Islington (but open to all) is Bright Sparks which take many small electrical items, including computer equipment for repair or recycling. A full list of item accepted for repair can be found here.

Paint

Old household paint can be donated to Community Repaint, the nearest donation point is in Walthamstow for individual donors.

Batteries

Many shops provide battery recycling bins.  There is one at Homebase in the Arena Shopping centre and one in Tesco Express on Green Lanes (just behind the door). The Mall in Wood Green also provides battery recycling collection points.
